SCRIPTURE

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The phrase “in the beginning” cannot be applied to the six days because verse two severs verse three from the beginning event with the connective sequencer And.

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”

This description has always been understood by ancient Hebrew writers to speak of degeneration and ruin—not creation. To circumvent getting in the weeds on a discussion of Hebrew, I will avoid arguing that the word was was understood by ancient Hebrews to carry the meaning of “became.” We need not go there to establish the facts. The English reader can always rely upon the Authorized Version to interpret its own words and phrases. Of course that is not true of the more than two hundred corrupt commercial versions produced in the last 134 years, beginning with the Revised Version of 1885. So a simple concordance search in your favorite King James Bible program turns up a rather fascinating word match.

The prophet Jeremiah, noted for his end-time prophecies of judgment, utilized the identical phrase in pronouncing judgment upon the land of Israel. Most Bible-believing commentators believe verses 23–26 of chapter 4 is a reference to the former desolation of the earth in Genesis 1:2, for it is a very common practice for the prophets to utilize former judgments to illustrate coming judgments.

Note, the context of the entire passage is destruction and ruin.

Jeremiah 4:20 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is [present tense] spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.
